摘 要:
In this talk, the Cardiff University’s involvement in the preparation, launch and commissioning of two new astronomical satellites in space, Planck and Herschel, will be introduced. Uniquely both of these use state of the art THz passive instrumentation to detect the faintest objects in the Universe back to the very first light: the Cosmic Microwave Background.
The two satellites were launched together on an Ariane 5 heavy launcher from French Guiana on 14 May 2009 and were subsequently separated in orbit. They were also both positioned at an Earth – Sun stationary position at Lagrangian point L2. This allows them to have a clear view of the cosmos without contamination from the intense solar or terrestrial THz radiation. Herschel is an Observatory designed to measure a range of objects from the first galaxies to local star formation regions whilst Planck is an all sky mapping satellite designed to study the CMB in 9 photometric bands to unprecedented detail.
An update on their progress will be given.
