Mathematical models have widely been used to predict, understand, and optimize complex physical processes in modeling and simulation of multiphase fluid flow in petroleum and coal reservoirs. These models are important for understanding the fate and transport of chemical species and heat. With this understanding the models are then applied to the needs of the fossil fuel industry to design enhanced energy recovery strategies.
This talk will address the recent development of mathematical and numerical techniques for modeling and simulating multiphase fluid flow in petroleum and coal reservoirs. The discussion will also look at the mathematical difficulties encountered in modeling, up-scaling, discretization, and solution. Dr. Chen was trained as a mathematician and has more than 20 years of experience with mathematical modeling and computer simulation with the petroleum industry. This talk will present a clear understanding of the role mathematics plays in the advancement of petroleum engineering. In this presentation, the speaker will briefly touch on his research background and discuss past and future research on energy modeling and simulation
