In a series of fMRI experiments, we investigated the involvement of dopaminergic brain structures known to be involved in reward learning in visual category learning. To this aim, we used the paradigm of information-integration category learning and coupled it with different kinds of feedback, ranging from monetary reward over cognitive feedback (correct/incorrect) to observational learning, i.e. no feedback at all. We found that activation of the ventral striatum reflects both monetary and cognitive reward expectation. In addition, in the observational learning task, striatal activation also reflected the development of subjective confidence, in the sense of an intrinsic prediction error. Finally, stimuli from rewarded categories elicit more similar activation patterns than physically equidistant stimuli from non-rewarded categories after learning.
