Disaster risk modeling, mapping and profiling for public decision making

Dr. Jianping Yan is a senior disaster risk assessment and management expert with the Global Risk Identification Programme (GRIP). Dr. Yan has 20+ years of working experience and specializes in disaster risk modelling, mapping, and profiling for public policy/decision making and development of National Risk Information System (NRIS), with in-depth knowledge of disaster risk management and climate change. He has extensive experience working with various international and national organizations including UNDP, World Bank, governmental authorities, research institutes, and NGOs in the fields of disaster risk assessment at both national and local level, climate change impact assessment, national Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategy, disaster preparedness planning, capacity building, national coordination mechanism establishment, multi-stakeholder engagement, and partnership building. His professional skills include international training and staff development, client-oriented country support and services, training course design, workshop facilitation,  team supervision, proposal preparation and review, and technical report writing and review, methodology development, information management and analysis, result-based project development & management. His strength includes strategic/conceptual/analytical thinking, planning and organizing, thoroughness, multi-tasking, and strong GIS skills. As an excellent team player and with extensive experience in developing countries, Dr. Yan is highly self-motivated and very comfortable to work in multi-cultural environments and deal with cross-cultural issues and a range of cultures, values and attitudes.

His previous achievements include: a) the successful leading to implement many international projects for UNDP country offices and the World Bank; b) the successful completion of multi-hazard risk assessments in both mountainous  and coastal environments;  c) the design and development of methodologies and tools for disaster risk assessment and management including spatial data infrastructure (SDI) for disaster management; and d) the successful facilitation of national and regional workshops on disaster risk assessment and management.
