Understanding condensed matter problems from string theory

主讲人: Dr. Hongbao Zhang  University of Crete, Greece

地  点: 教三楼321会议室

主  办: 物理系

摘   要:

Among others, the most recent unification in physics, namely the marriage between quantum mechanics and gravity, which was achieved in a fantastic way by string theory as AdS/CFT in last decade, has been exhibiting its remarkable power in understanding the dynamics of strongly coupled systems. In this talk, after a brief review of what string theory is and what string theory is for, I will focus on applying AdS/CFT to condensed matter physics, which is now dubbed as AdS/CMT. In particular, if time permits, I will present our own work on the holographic non-relativistic Fermi liquids, where a flat band is achieved.

Note added: This talk is expected to be also accessible to advanced undergraduate students and graduate student

Dr. Zhang spent 2 year visiting graduate at Perimeter Institute in Canada from 2007 to 2009, did 3 year postdoc at University of Crete, Greece from 2009 to 2012. He has a broad interest in theoretical physics and has been working on various aspects of theoretical physics such as the connections between string theory and condensed matter theory.
